Headstones in Napanee and Lennox & Addington: Loyalist Burying Grounds

Some of Ontario's oldest Loyalist burial grounds are here. How Napanee and Loyalist Township families add new stones beside historic ones.

Lennox and Addington — Greater Napanee, Loyalist Township (Amherstview, Bath, Odessa), Stone Mills and Addington Highlands — is where many United Empire Loyalists settled in 1784, including at Adolphustown. Some of Ontario's oldest burial grounds are here.

How Ontario regulates cemeteries

In Ontario, cemeteries operate under the Funeral, Burial and Cremation Services Act, 2002, administered by the Bereavement Authority of Ontario (BAO). A few practical consequences for families:

  • Every cemetery has by-laws. They cover memorial sizes, materials, foundations and installation, and the cemetery must make them available to you. Ask for them before you choose a design.
  • You can buy from an independent supplier. Families may buy a monument from the cemetery or from an independent retailer or manufacturer; either way, it has to meet the cemetery's by-laws.
  • Care and maintenance contributions. Ontario cemeteries collect a regulated contribution to their care and maintenance fund when larger markers and monuments are installed. Ask for the amount in writing alongside foundation and installation fees.

Our cemetery headstone rules guide has a checklist of questions to bring.

Adding stones beside historic ones

Historic cemeteries may have heritage rules or simply a strong character. A modest grey granite stone, simple lettering and a traditional shape often sit best beside 18th- and 19th-century markers. If you're repairing or recording older stones, see headstone restoration and repair.

Rural and township cemeteries

Many cemeteries here are run by townships, churches or volunteer boards rather than large operators. They still have by-laws, but they may be short, and the person to call may be a township clerk or a church secretary. Ask early about size limits, foundations and who sets the stone. See questions to ask a cemetery.

Ordering step by step

  1. Get the cemetery's by-laws and fee schedule in writing.
  2. Choose a design — in person at our warehouse or in the Design Studio.
  3. Submit the design for cemetery approval.
  4. Approve the proof; we produce and deliver.
  5. The cemetery (or its approved installer) sets the monument on its schedule.

Our week-by-week ordering timeline shows how long each step usually takes.
