Headstones in Ottawa: Bilingual Inscriptions, Veterans and Granite for Cold Winters

Ottawa is one of the coldest national capitals in the world, and it's a bilingual city. Both facts shape how families here plan a headstone. English and French inscriptions

Bilingual inscriptions are common in Ottawa and eastern Ontario. Practical tips:

• Accents matter — é, è, ê, ç and others must be engraved correctly. Send the exact text and check the proof.
• Decide on the layout — side by side, one above the other, or French and English on opposite faces.
• Common phrases include "Repose en paix" and "À jamais dans nos cœurs".

Veterans

Many Ottawa families include service members and veterans. Military emblems and service details can be engraved on a private headstone. How Ontario regulates cemeteries

In Ontario, cemeteries operate under the Funeral, Burial and Cremation Services Act, 2002, administered by the Bereavement Authority of Ontario (BAO). A few practical consequences for families:

• Every cemetery has by-laws. They cover memorial sizes, materials, foundations and installation, and the cemetery must make them available to you. Ask for them before you choose a design.
• You can buy from an independent supplier. Families may buy a monument from the cemetery or from an independent retailer or manufacturer; either way, it has to meet the cemetery's by-laws.
• Care and maintenance contributions. Ontario cemeteries collect a regulated contribution to their care and maintenance fund when larger markers and monuments are installed. Ask for the amount in writing alongside foundation and installation fees.

Deep cold and installation season

Ottawa's long, cold winters freeze the ground deeply, and many cemeteries set monuments only once it has thawed and firmed in spring. Order over the winter so production and delivery are complete for the start of the season, and make sure foundations follow the cemetery's specification.
