Headstones in Cornwall and Stormont, Dundas & Glengarry

Cornwall and the SDG counties: Scottish Glengarry, francophone and Loyalist traditions, Ontario cemetery rules and granite delivery.

The United Counties of Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry — with Cornwall, Alexandria, Morrisburg, Long Sault, Winchester and Maxville — combine Scottish Highland, Loyalist, francophone and Mohawk heritage along the St. Lawrence.

How Ontario regulates cemeteries

In Ontario, cemeteries operate under the Funeral, Burial and Cremation Services Act, 2002, administered by the Bereavement Authority of Ontario (BAO). A few practical consequences for families:

  • Every cemetery has by-laws. They cover memorial sizes, materials, foundations and installation, and the cemetery must make them available to you. Ask for them before you choose a design.
  • You can buy from an independent supplier. Families may buy a monument from the cemetery or from an independent retailer or manufacturer; either way, it has to meet the cemetery's by-laws.
  • Care and maintenance contributions. Ontario cemeteries collect a regulated contribution to their care and maintenance fund when larger markers and monuments are installed. Ask for the amount in writing alongside foundation and installation fees.

Our cemetery headstone rules guide has a checklist of questions to bring.

Glengarry Scottish heritage

Glengarry was settled by Scottish Highlanders, and the Glengarry Highland Games at Maxville still celebrate it. Thistles, Celtic crosses, tartan details and Gaelic lines suit many families — have any Gaelic checked by a native speaker. See Scottish headstone inscriptions.

French and bilingual inscriptions

Many families here choose French or a bilingual layout. Decide which language leads, keep accents (é, è, ê, à, ç) exact on the proof, and consider classic lines such as "À la douce mémoire de", "Repose en paix" or "Toujours dans nos cœurs". See our French inscriptions guide.

The St. Lawrence

River winds and freeze-thaw call for dense, polished granite with deep lettering. Families with relatives across the river in New York can see our North Country guide.

Ordering step by step

  1. Get the cemetery's by-laws and fee schedule in writing.
  2. Choose a design — in person at our warehouse or in the Design Studio.
  3. Submit the design for cemetery approval.
  4. Approve the proof; we produce and deliver.
  5. The cemetery (or its approved installer) sets the monument on its schedule.

Our week-by-week ordering timeline shows how long each step usually takes.
