Headstones in York Region: Vaughan, Markham, Richmond Hill & Newmarket

From Italian family monuments in Vaughan to Chinese headstone traditions in Markham, a guide to designing and approving a granite memorial in York Region.

Laser-etched portrait on a black granite headstone

York Region — Vaughan, Markham, Richmond Hill, Newmarket, Aurora and the towns to the north — includes some of Canada's largest Italian-Canadian and Chinese-Canadian communities. Both have strong memorial traditions, and both translate beautifully into granite.

Italian-Canadian family monuments

In Vaughan and Woodbridge, many families choose:

  • Large upright family monuments with the family name across the top.
  • Photo portraits — traditionally ceramic photo plaques, and increasingly laser-etched portraits on black granite.
  • Religious imagery — the Madonna, Sacred Heart, crosses and angels.
  • Italian inscriptions such as "Riposa in pace" or "Sempre nei nostri cuori".

Laser etching gives photographic detail directly in the stone — see our laser-etched portrait guide.

Chinese-Canadian headstone traditions

In Markham and Richmond Hill, Chinese headstones often follow a traditional layout:

  • Names in Chinese characters, often with the English name too.
  • The ancestral home town or village of the deceased.
  • Dates, sometimes including the lunar calendar.
  • Names of children or descendants who erected the stone.

Character accuracy is essential — send the text as typed characters and have a fluent family member check the proof. Some families also consult on orientation and timing; we're happy to work to whatever the family decides.

How Ontario regulates cemeteries

In Ontario, cemeteries operate under the Funeral, Burial and Cremation Services Act, 2002, administered by the Bereavement Authority of Ontario (BAO). A few practical consequences for families:

  • Every cemetery has by-laws. They cover memorial sizes, materials, foundations and installation, and the cemetery must make them available to you. Ask for them before you choose a design.
  • You can buy from an independent supplier. Families may buy a monument from the cemetery or from an independent retailer or manufacturer; either way, it has to meet the cemetery's by-laws.
  • Care and maintenance contributions. Ontario cemeteries collect a regulated contribution to their care and maintenance fund when larger markers and monuments are installed. Ask for the amount in writing alongside foundation and installation fees.

Our cemetery headstone rules guide has a checklist of questions to bring.

Granite and climate

York Region's northern towns are colder and snowier than the lakeshore. Choose dense, polished granite with deep lettering, and follow the cemetery's foundation specification. Black granite gives the best contrast for portraits and Chinese characters; grey suits traditional family monuments.
