Headstones in Brockville and Leeds & Grenville: Gananoque, Prescott & Kemptville

St. Lawrence River towns, Thousand Islands cottages and Loyalist heritage. A practical headstone guide under Ontario cemetery rules.

The United Counties of Leeds and Grenville follow the St. Lawrence River — Brockville, Gananoque, Prescott, Kemptville and the Thousand Islands — with Loyalist roots and a long river heritage.

How Ontario regulates cemeteries

In Ontario, cemeteries operate under the Funeral, Burial and Cremation Services Act, 2002, administered by the Bereavement Authority of Ontario (BAO). A few practical consequences for families:

  • Every cemetery has by-laws. They cover memorial sizes, materials, foundations and installation, and the cemetery must make them available to you. Ask for them before you choose a design.
  • You can buy from an independent supplier. Families may buy a monument from the cemetery or from an independent retailer or manufacturer; either way, it has to meet the cemetery's by-laws.
  • Care and maintenance contributions. Ontario cemeteries collect a regulated contribution to their care and maintenance fund when larger markers and monuments are installed. Ask for the amount in writing alongside foundation and installation fees.

Our cemetery headstone rules guide has a checklist of questions to bring.

River and island families

Thousand Islands cottage families and river communities often choose nautical or water designs — anchors, lighthouses, sailboats or a river scene. See anchor meaning and lighthouse meaning.

Older cemeteries

Brockville, Prescott and the river villages have historic cemeteries where new stones should respect their surroundings. Ask about any heritage rules.

Cross-border plots

Some families have relatives across the river in New York State. We deliver to both sides — see our North Country guide.

Ordering step by step

  1. Get the cemetery's by-laws and fee schedule in writing.
  2. Choose a design — in person at our warehouse or in the Design Studio.
  3. Submit the design for cemetery approval.
  4. Approve the proof; we produce and deliver.
  5. The cemetery (or its approved installer) sets the monument on its schedule.

Our week-by-week ordering timeline shows how long each step usually takes.
