Headstones in Orangeville & Dufferin County: Shelburne, Mono & Grand Valley
Dufferin's highlands get some of southern Ontario's snowiest winters. A guide to cemetery rules, granite choice and timing.

Dufferin County — Orangeville, Shelburne, Mono, Mulmur, Grand Valley and Amaranth — sits on high ground at the headwaters of several rivers. Its elevation brings some of the snowiest, windiest winters in southern Ontario.
How Ontario regulates cemeteries
In Ontario, cemeteries operate under the Funeral, Burial and Cremation Services Act, 2002, administered by the Bereavement Authority of Ontario (BAO). A few practical consequences for families:
- Every cemetery has by-laws. They cover memorial sizes, materials, foundations and installation, and the cemetery must make them available to you. Ask for them before you choose a design.
- You can buy from an independent supplier. Families may buy a monument from the cemetery or from an independent retailer or manufacturer; either way, it has to meet the cemetery's by-laws.
- Care and maintenance contributions. Ontario cemeteries collect a regulated contribution to their care and maintenance fund when larger markers and monuments are installed. Ask for the amount in writing alongside foundation and installation fees.
Our cemetery headstone rules guide has a checklist of questions to bring.
Highland weather
High, open ground means deep frost and drifting snow. Choose dense, polished granite, deep-cut lettering and a proper frost-depth foundation, and expect installation from spring to autumn. See protecting a headstone in winter.
Rural and township cemeteries
Many cemeteries here are run by townships, churches or volunteer boards rather than large operators. They still have by-laws, but they may be short, and the person to call may be a township clerk or a church secretary. Ask early about size limits, foundations and who sets the stone. See questions to ask a cemetery.
Commuter families
Many Dufferin families moved from the GTA and may want a stone that matches family plots elsewhere. Send photos and we can match colours and styles.
