Headstones in Haldimand & Norfolk: Simcoe, Port Dover, Caledonia & Dunnville

Lake Erie shore towns and farm country: a guide to Ontario cemetery rules, rural church cemeteries, Dutch and Belgian farm heritage and granite delivery.

Haldimand and Norfolk counties stretch along the north shore of Lake Erie — Simcoe, Port Dover, Delhi, Waterford, Caledonia, Hagersville and Dunnville — with farm country between. Generations of Dutch, Belgian, German and Hungarian farm families, alongside long-established Loyalist and Six Nations neighbours, are remembered in town, township and church cemeteries.

How Ontario regulates cemeteries

In Ontario, cemeteries operate under the Funeral, Burial and Cremation Services Act, 2002, administered by the Bereavement Authority of Ontario (BAO). A few practical consequences for families:

  • Every cemetery has by-laws. They cover memorial sizes, materials, foundations and installation, and the cemetery must make them available to you. Ask for them before you choose a design.
  • You can buy from an independent supplier. Families may buy a monument from the cemetery or from an independent retailer or manufacturer; either way, it has to meet the cemetery's by-laws.
  • Care and maintenance contributions. Ontario cemeteries collect a regulated contribution to their care and maintenance fund when larger markers and monuments are installed. Ask for the amount in writing alongside foundation and installation fees.

Our cemetery headstone rules guide has a checklist of questions to bring.

Rural and township cemeteries

Many cemeteries here are run by townships, churches or volunteer boards rather than large operators. They still have by-laws, but they may be short, and the person to call may be a township clerk or a church secretary. Ask early about size limits, foundations and who sets the stone. See questions to ask a cemetery.

Lake Erie weather

The lakeshore brings wind, humidity and freeze-thaw. Polished granite with deep lettering suits it best, and families often choose grey or black granite to match older stones in the same plot. See matching a new headstone.

Ordering step by step

  1. Get the cemetery's by-laws and fee schedule in writing.
  2. Choose a design — in person at our warehouse or in the Design Studio.
  3. Submit the design for cemetery approval.
  4. Approve the proof; we produce and deliver.
  5. The cemetery (or its approved installer) sets the monument on its schedule.

Our week-by-week ordering timeline shows how long each step usually takes.
