Ontario cemetery rules
Ontario cemeteries operate under the Funeral, Burial and Cremation Services Act, 2002, administered by the Bereavement Authority of Ontario. Every cemetery has by-laws covering memorial sizes, materials, foundations and installation, and must make them available to you. Families may buy a monument from the cemetery or from an independent supplier, and cemeteries collect a regulated care and maintenance contribution on larger markers.
Haldimand-Norfolk has municipal, church, Catholic and private cemeteries. Each sets its own rules on memorial size, style, materials and foundations, and many require a dimensioned drawing for approval before the stone is made.
Climate and durability in Haldimand-Norfolk
Lakeshore weather and the escarpment
Lake Ontario wind and humidity along the shore, freeze-thaw winters and hilly escarpment cemeteries all affect memorials. Dense, polished granite and properly sized foundations keep monuments level and readable.
When headstones are installed
Spring-to-autumn installation
Most cemeteries install outside the deep-freeze months; sloped escarpment lots may need leveled foundations.
