Ontario cemetery rules
Ontario cemeteries operate under the Funeral, Burial and Cremation Services Act, 2002, administered by the Bereavement Authority of Ontario. Every cemetery has by-laws covering memorial sizes, materials, foundations and installation, and must make them available to you. Families may buy a monument from the cemetery or from an independent supplier, and cemeteries collect a regulated care and maintenance contribution on larger markers.
Brant has municipal, church, Catholic and private cemeteries. Each sets its own rules on memorial size, style, materials and foundations, and many require a dimensioned drawing for approval before the stone is made.
Climate and durability in Brant
Lakeshore weather and the escarpment
Lake Ontario wind and humidity along the shore, freeze-thaw winters and hilly escarpment cemeteries all affect memorials. Dense, polished granite and properly sized foundations keep monuments level and readable.
When headstones are installed
Spring-to-autumn installation
Most cemeteries install outside the deep-freeze months; sloped escarpment lots may need leveled foundations.
