Headstones in Barrie & Simcoe County: Snowbelt Cemeteries and Granite
Barrie, Orillia, Innisfil and the Georgian Bay shore sit in Ontario's snowbelt. What heavy snow means for headstone choice, foundations and installation timing.

Barrie, Orillia, Innisfil, Collingwood, Wasaga Beach, Midland and the townships of Simcoe County sit in one of Ontario's snowiest areas. Snow squalls off Georgian Bay can bury cemeteries for months.
How Ontario regulates cemeteries
In Ontario, cemeteries operate under the Funeral, Burial and Cremation Services Act, 2002, administered by the Bereavement Authority of Ontario (BAO). A few practical consequences for families:
- Every cemetery has by-laws. They cover memorial sizes, materials, foundations and installation, and the cemetery must make them available to you. Ask for them before you choose a design.
- You can buy from an independent supplier. Families may buy a monument from the cemetery or from an independent retailer or manufacturer; either way, it has to meet the cemetery's by-laws.
- Care and maintenance contributions. Ontario cemeteries collect a regulated contribution to their care and maintenance fund when larger markers and monuments are installed. Ask for the amount in writing alongside foundation and installation fees.

What the snowbelt means for a headstone
- Granite, not marble or sandstone. Dense, polished granite resists freeze-thaw.
- Deep-cut, well-painted lettering stays readable when snow and ice sit on the stone.
- Height matters. In deep-snow areas some families prefer an upright or slant so the name stays visible in winter — if the section allows it.
- Proper foundations stop frost heave from tilting the stone. See fixing a leaning headstone.
Winter care
Brush snow off by hand, never chip ice and never use salt near the memorial. See protecting a headstone in winter.
Timing
Most Simcoe County cemeteries install from late spring, once frost leaves the ground, until late autumn. Ordering in winter lines up well with a spring installation.

Should I choose an upright headstone in a snowy area?
