Headstones in Muskoka: Huntsville, Bracebridge, Gravenhurst & Cottage Country
Small township cemeteries, seasonal access roads and cottage families who live elsewhere — how to plan a headstone in Muskoka and Parry Sound.

Muskoka — Huntsville, Bracebridge, Gravenhurst, Port Carling and the lake townships — and neighbouring Parry Sound are served by small township, church and community cemeteries. Many families who rest here live elsewhere for most of the year.
Township cemeteries
- Find the right office. Most Muskoka cemeteries are run by the town or township; some by churches.
- Ask for the by-laws on monument sizes, foundations and approvals.
- Expect seasonal access. Some cemeteries are hard to reach in winter, and installers wait for firm ground in spring.
Ordering from away
Cottage families often plan a memorial from Toronto, Ottawa, the US or overseas. Design in our Design Studio, share it with family, approve the proof by email, and we coordinate delivery with the cemetery. See ordering for a cemetery in another city.
Cottage-country designs
Loons, canoes, muskoka chairs, pines and lake sunsets are favourite etched designs — see hiker and camper ideas and custom etched scenes. A rock-pitch edge suits the Canadian Shield landscape.
How Ontario regulates cemeteries
In Ontario, cemeteries operate under the Funeral, Burial and Cremation Services Act, 2002, administered by the Bereavement Authority of Ontario (BAO). A few practical consequences for families:
- Every cemetery has by-laws. They cover memorial sizes, materials, foundations and installation, and the cemetery must make them available to you. Ask for them before you choose a design.
- You can buy from an independent supplier. Families may buy a monument from the cemetery or from an independent retailer or manufacturer; either way, it has to meet the cemetery's by-laws.
- Care and maintenance contributions. Ontario cemeteries collect a regulated contribution to their care and maintenance fund when larger markers and monuments are installed. Ask for the amount in writing alongside foundation and installation fees.
