Headstones in Oxford County: Woodstock, Ingersoll & Tillsonburg

Dairy country and small-town cemeteries. How Woodstock, Ingersoll and Tillsonburg families choose a headstone under Ontario cemetery rules.

Oxford County — Woodstock, Ingersoll, Tillsonburg and townships such as Norwich, Zorra and East Zorra-Tavistock — is some of Ontario's richest dairy country. Its cemeteries include large municipal grounds in the towns and small rural and church cemeteries where farm families have been buried for generations.

How Ontario regulates cemeteries

In Ontario, cemeteries operate under the Funeral, Burial and Cremation Services Act, 2002, administered by the Bereavement Authority of Ontario (BAO). A few practical consequences for families:

  • Every cemetery has by-laws. They cover memorial sizes, materials, foundations and installation, and the cemetery must make them available to you. Ask for them before you choose a design.
  • You can buy from an independent supplier. Families may buy a monument from the cemetery or from an independent retailer or manufacturer; either way, it has to meet the cemetery's by-laws.
  • Care and maintenance contributions. Ontario cemeteries collect a regulated contribution to their care and maintenance fund when larger markers and monuments are installed. Ask for the amount in writing alongside foundation and installation fees.

Our cemetery headstone rules guide has a checklist of questions to bring.

Farm-family monuments

Many Oxford families choose a shared family monument with space for several names, or matching individual stones in a family row. Dutch Reformed, Mennonite and German heritage shows in plain, dignified designs and scripture verses. See family monuments vs individual markers.

Winters

Southwestern Ontario snow and freeze-thaw call for dense, polished granite and deep lettering, on a foundation built to the cemetery's specification.

Ordering step by step

  1. Get the cemetery's by-laws and fee schedule in writing.
  2. Choose a design — in person at our warehouse or in the Design Studio.
  3. Submit the design for cemetery approval.
  4. Approve the proof; we produce and deliver.
  5. The cemetery (or its approved installer) sets the monument on its schedule.

Our week-by-week ordering timeline shows how long each step usually takes.
