Headstones in Bruce County: Kincardine, Saugeen Shores, Walkerton & the Peninsula

From Kincardine to Tobermory: Ontario cemetery rules, lake-wind and snowbelt weather, peninsula delivery and factory-direct granite.

Bruce County runs from Kincardine and Saugeen Shores (Port Elgin, Southampton) through Walkerton to Wiarton and the Bruce Peninsula at Tobermory. Town, township and church cemeteries serve the area, and the Saugeen Ojibway Nation communities have their own burial traditions.

How Ontario regulates cemeteries

In Ontario, cemeteries operate under the Funeral, Burial and Cremation Services Act, 2002, administered by the Bereavement Authority of Ontario (BAO). A few practical consequences for families:

  • Every cemetery has by-laws. They cover memorial sizes, materials, foundations and installation, and the cemetery must make them available to you. Ask for them before you choose a design.
  • You can buy from an independent supplier. Families may buy a monument from the cemetery or from an independent retailer or manufacturer; either way, it has to meet the cemetery's by-laws.
  • Care and maintenance contributions. Ontario cemeteries collect a regulated contribution to their care and maintenance fund when larger markers and monuments are installed. Ask for the amount in writing alongside foundation and installation fees.

Our cemetery headstone rules guide has a checklist of questions to bring.

Snowbelt granite

Lake-effect snow, wind and freeze-thaw are hard on stone. Choose dense, fully polished granite that doesn't absorb water, ask for deep-cut lettering that stays readable under ice, and make sure the base sits on a proper foundation so frost heave doesn't tilt it. See protecting a headstone in winter.

Peninsula delivery

Long distances and narrow rural roads mean delivery is planned carefully. Let us know about access — gravel lanes, hills or soft ground — so the right truck and equipment are sent. See DAP delivery.

Rural and township cemeteries

Many cemeteries here are run by townships, churches or volunteer boards rather than large operators. They still have by-laws, but they may be short, and the person to call may be a township clerk or a church secretary. Ask early about size limits, foundations and who sets the stone. See questions to ask a cemetery.

Ordering step by step

  1. Get the cemetery's by-laws and fee schedule in writing.
  2. Choose a design — in person at our warehouse or in the Design Studio.
  3. Submit the design for cemetery approval.
  4. Approve the proof; we produce and deliver.
  5. The cemetery (or its approved installer) sets the monument on its schedule.

Our week-by-week ordering timeline shows how long each step usually takes.
