Headstone Proof Approval Checklist: What to Check Before You Sign

A line-by-line checklist for approving a headstone proof — spelling, dates, layout, sizes, granite, finish and symbols — so nothing is engraved wrong.

The proof is the drawing your memorial is made from. Once you sign it, the stone is cut and engraved exactly as shown — so this is the moment to be thorough.

  • Accents and special characters (é, ñ, ł) present
  • Dates correct and in a consistent format — see date formats
  • Epitaph wording and punctuation exact
  • Non-English text checked by a fluent reader

Layout

  • Lines centred or aligned as intended
  • Space left for any future names or dates
  • Letter heights large enough to read
  • Symbols and photos positioned and sized as wanted

  • Shape matches what you chose
  • Dimensions (W × T × H) fit the cemetery's limits
  • Base size, finish and colour correct
  • Granite colour and polish (P2, P3, P5, rock pitch) correct — see finishes explained

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a headstone proof?

A scaled drawing showing the exact shape, size, layout and inscription that will be produced. Your approval releases it to production.

Can I change a headstone after approving the proof?

Changes after approval may not be possible once cutting or engraving has begun, and may add cost. Check carefully first.

Who should check the proof?

At least two people — ideally including someone who knows the names and any non-English text well.
