Headstone Engraving Methods Compared: Sandblast, Laser, Hand-Carved and More

How headstone lettering and artwork are made — sandblasting, shape carving, laser etching, hand carving and CNC — and which method suits each design.

Most modern headstones use more than one engraving method — sandblasted lettering with an etched portrait, for example. Here is how each works and where it shines.

The main methods

MethodHow it worksBest for
SandblastingA rubber stencil protects the stone; abrasive cuts the exposed areasLettering, symbols, borders
Shape carvingStaged sandblasting creates depth and rounded formsRoses, leaves, 3D-looking artwork
Laser etchingA laser lightens the polished surface of dark granitePortraits, scenes, fine detail
Hand etchingAn artist chips detail by handBespoke portraits and scenes
Hand carvingChisel work by a carverTraditional and heritage work
CNC carvingComputer-controlled cuttingPrecise carved designs and repeat work

Sandblasted lettering

The standard for headstones. Letters can be V-cut, flat-bottomed or raised (the background is lowered). Depth and crisp edges keep them legible for generations. Compare styles in our raised vs recessed lettering guide.

Laser etching

Etching works best on fine-grained black granite, where the lightened marks contrast with the polish. It can reproduce photographs and detailed scenes, but it is a surface treatment — see laser-etched portraits and custom etched scenes.

Shape carving

Layered blasting gives roses, lilies and crosses real depth. It reads well on grey, red and blue granites where etching shows less contrast.

Colour fill

Sandblasted letters can be left natural, painted or filled with gold leaf — see gold leaf lettering and repainting lettering.

Choosing a method

  • Text: sandblasted.
  • Portrait or scene on black granite: laser or hand etching.
  • Flowers or symbols with depth: shape carving.
  • Light-coloured granite: carving rather than etching.

Key Takeaways

  • Sandblasting is the standard for lettering.
  • Laser etching suits portraits and scenes on black granite.
  • Shape carving adds depth and works on all granite colours.

Frequently Asked Questions

How are headstones engraved today?

Mostly by sandblasting through a stencil. Portraits and scenes are often laser or hand etched, and flowers may be shape carved.

Does laser etching work on grey granite?

It shows much less contrast. Laser etching is best on fine-grained black granite.

Which engraving lasts longest?

Deep sandblasted or carved lettering lasts longest. Etching is a surface treatment, so it benefits from dense, high-quality black granite.
