Q: What designs suit ranch families?

Horses, cattle brands and prairie scenes.

Medicine Hat is one of Canada's sunniest cities, and the dry southeast corner of Alberta — with Redcliff, Brooks and Bow Island — sees strong sun, dry wind and cold winters.

Cemetery rules in Alberta

Cemeteries in Alberta are regulated provincially, and each cemetery — municipal, church, Catholic or private — sets its own by-laws on memorial size, materials, foundations and installation. Ask for them in writing before you order.

Whatever the cemetery, the practical steps are the same: get its rules on sizes, materials, foundations and installation in writing, ask for the full fee schedule, and submit your design for approval before production. Our cemetery headstone rules guide has a checklist of questions.

Sun-proof granite

Polished granite keeps its colour under strong UV; painted or colour-filled details may need touching up over time. Grey granite stays cooler in summer. See granite for hot, sunny climates.

Prairie weather

Prairie winters bring deep frost, strong winds and freeze-thaw swings, and summers bring strong sun and hail. Dense, polished granite with deep-cut lettering, on a foundation built to the cemetery's specification, lasts best. Most cemeteries install from spring to autumn. See protecting a headstone in winter.

Ranch country

Horses, cattle brands and prairie scenes suit southeast Alberta's ranch families. See headstone ideas for a cowboy or rancher.

Veterans

Eligible Canadian veterans may qualify for a grave marker through Veterans Affairs Canada or the Last Post Fund, and families can also choose a private granite monument with service details. See Last Post Fund markers and military inscriptions.
