Cemetery rules in Quebec

In Quebec, funeral and cemetery activities are governed by the Act respecting funeral operations, and each cemetery — many of them parish or church-run — sets its own rules on monuments and installation.

Whatever the cemetery, the practical steps are the same: get its rules on sizes, materials, foundations and installation in writing, ask for the full fee schedule, and submit your design for approval before production. Our cemetery headstone rules guide has a checklist of questions.

French inscriptions

Most families here choose French, sometimes with English. Keep every accent (é, è, ê, à, ç) exact on the proof, and consider classic lines such as "À la douce mémoire de", "Repose en paix", "Ton souvenir est notre trésor" or "Toujours dans nos cœurs". See our French inscriptions guide.
