Headstones in Albuquerque & New Mexico

High-desert sun, Hispanic and Native traditions and Santa Fe National Cemetery. A New Mexico headstone guide.

New Mexico's Hispanic families trace their roots back centuries, and its Pueblo, Navajo and Apache nations keep their own traditions. Albuquerque's cemeteries, village camposantos and Santa Fe National Cemetery serve families across the state.

Hispanic traditions

Crosses, the Virgin of Guadalupe, retablo-style imagery and Spanish inscriptions are common, and many families decorate graves for Día de los Muertos. See Mexican traditions and Spanish phrases.

Native communities

Tribal and pueblo cemeteries follow their own community practices. Follow the family's and community's guidance on any memorial.

Desert sun

Intense UV and heat favour polished granite, which keeps its colour; painted or colour-filled details may need touching up. Black granite gets hot to the touch in summer, while grey stays cooler. See granite for hot, sunny climates.

Cemetery rules

In the United States, cemeteries are regulated state by state, and every cemetery — municipal, religious, nonprofit or private — sets its own rules on memorial sizes, materials, foundations and installation. Before you order:

  • Ask the cemetery for its rules and fee schedule in writing (foundation, setting and any permit fees).
  • Confirm who installs — cemetery staff or an approved monument company.
  • Submit the design for approval before production.

Our cemetery headstone rules guide has a full checklist, and headstone setting fees explained covers the extra costs.

Veterans

Eligible veterans can receive a government headstone, marker or medallion, and families can also choose a private granite monument that includes service details. See veteran headstones and VA rules, the VA medallion and military inscriptions.
