How to Clean a Granite Headstone Safely (Step by Step)

A gentle, cemetery-safe way to clean a granite headstone — what to use, what never to use, how to handle moss and lichen, and how often to do it.

Granite is one of the toughest materials used for memorials, but the wrong cleaning method can still dull the polish, damage engraving or stain the stone. The good news: most granite headstones need nothing more than clean water, a soft brush and a little patience.

Before you start

  • Check with the cemetery. Some cemeteries restrict who may clean memorials, especially older or historic stones.
  • Look for damage first. If the stone is cracked, leaning or flaking, don't scrub — see our restoration and repair guide.
  • Choose a mild, overcast day. Cleaners dry too fast in hot sun, and freezing weather can trap water in the stone.

What you need

UseAvoid
Plenty of clean waterBleach and household cleaners
Soft natural or nylon brushesWire brushes, scouring pads, steel wool
Non-ionic, pH-neutral soap (a few drops per bucket)Vinegar, lemon or any acid
Wooden or plastic scraper for mossPressure washers and power tools
Clean cotton clothsSealants or waxes not made for granite

Step by step

  1. Soak the stone. Wet it thoroughly from the bottom up to prevent streaking. Water softens dirt and growth so it lifts easily.
  2. Lift loose growth. Gently ease off moss and bird droppings with a wooden or plastic scraper.
  3. Wash with a soft brush. Use a few drops of pH-neutral soap in a bucket of water. Work in small circles, bottom to top, keeping the stone wet.
  4. Clean the lettering carefully. Use a soft toothbrush in engraved areas, especially painted or gold-leaf letters, which can be fragile.
  5. Rinse well. Rinse from the top down until no soap remains.
  6. Dry polished faces. Wipe polished surfaces with a soft cloth to avoid water spots.

Moss, lichen and black stains

Biological growth comes back if you only scrub it off. A biological cleaner made for stone (sold by monument and conservation suppliers) kills the growth so rain gradually washes it away over the following weeks. Follow the label and rinse well.

How often to clean

Once or twice a year is plenty for most granite memorials. Over-cleaning causes more wear than dirt ever will.

Key Takeaways

  • Water, a soft brush and pH-neutral soap clean most granite headstones safely.
  • Never use bleach, acids, wire brushes or pressure washers.
  • Treat moss and lichen with a stone-safe biological cleaner, then let rain finish the job.
  • Ask the cemetery before cleaning, especially historic stones.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use dish soap on a headstone?

Use only a few drops of a non-ionic, pH-neutral soap in a bucket of water. Many household dish soaps contain additives, so a stone-safe soap is better.

Is it safe to pressure wash a granite headstone?

No. Pressure washers can damage engraving, paint fill and joints, and force water into the stone. A soft brush and plenty of water is safer.

How do I remove lichen from a headstone?

Soak the stone, gently lift what you can with a plastic or wooden scraper, then apply a biological cleaner made for stone and let rain wash the dead growth away.
