Headstones in Prince Edward Island: Charlottetown, Summerside and Acadian Communities

Prince Edward Island's cemeteries are mostly church and community burial grounds — in Charlottetown, Summerside, Stratford, Cornwall, Montague and the many rural parishes. The Évangéline region and other Acadian communities keep French traditions alive.

Cemetery rules in Prince Edward Island

Cemeteries in Prince Edward Island are regulated provincially, and each cemetery — municipal, church, Catholic or private — sets its own by-laws on memorial size, materials, foundations and installation. Ask for them in writing before you order.

Whatever the cemetery, the practical steps are the same: get its rules on sizes, materials, foundations and installation in writing, ask for the full fee schedule, and submit your design for approval before production. Our cemetery headstone rules guide has a checklist of questions.

Salt air

Sea winds carry salt across much of the island. Dense, polished granite resists salt best, and deep lettering stays readable. See best headstones for coastal cemeteries.

Acadian inscriptions

Acadian families often choose French inscriptions and the Acadian star (Stella Maris). Keep accents exact on the proof. See our French inscriptions guide.
